What Is SkinPen Microneedling Used For?
Microneedling is one of the more versatile treatments we offer because it improves the underlying structure of the skin rather than simply resurfacing it. It is safe for all skin types and tones, including deeper skin tones that carry a higher risk of pigmentation with some laser treatments.
Your provider may recommend SkinPen if you are looking to address:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Acne scarring and other textural scarring
- Enlarged pores
- Uneven or rough skin texture
- Loss of firmness
- Stretch marks
- Uneven skin tone
Microneedling is most often performed on the face, but it can also be used on the neck, chest, back, and other areas of the body.
What to Expect
A topical numbing cream is applied before treatment to keep you comfortable. Your provider then passes the SkinPen device over the treatment area, creating controlled microchannels at a depth customized to your skin and your concerns. The treatment itself takes roughly 30 minutes, plus time for numbing beforehand.
Those microchannels trigger your body’s natural repair response, which is what drives new collagen and elastin production. Because the process works with your own healing, results build gradually rather than appearing all at once.
Most patients need a series of treatments to see meaningful change. A course of three to six sessions spaced about four to six weeks apart is typical, with the exact number depending on what you are treating — textural scarring generally requires more sessions than fine lines or overall tone.
After Your Treatment
Expect redness similar to a moderate sunburn for the first 24 to 48 hours, along with some tightness or mild sensitivity. Most patients are comfortable returning to normal activities the next day, and makeup can usually be worn after 24 hours.
Your provider will give you specific aftercare instructions, which generally include gentle cleansing, keeping the skin well hydrated, and diligent sun protection while your skin recovers. Initial improvement in tone and texture often appears within a couple of weeks, while collagen remodeling continues for several months after your final session.
Am I a Candidate for SkinPen Microneedling?
Most patients in good general health are good candidates, and microneedling is a particularly strong option for acne scarring and for patients who want collagen stimulation without heat or light energy.
Microneedling is not appropriate during an active acne breakout, over an open lesion, or during a flare of a condition such as eczema or rosacea in the treatment area. Your provider will also want to know about a history of keloid scarring, cold sores, recent isotretinoin use, or any condition that affects wound healing, as these may change the treatment plan or the timing. Microneedling is not performed during pregnancy.
